William Mann died from wounds on 18th November, 1914, after having been sent to a base hospital on the coast, but as yet there is no information as to when and where he was wounded. The 1st Devonshire battalion was part of 8 Brigade, 3rd Division, that had arrived in France at the beginning of the war and had been involved in much of the fighting since then including the Battle of  La Bassée in October, 1914 before moving up to the Ypres sector near Wytschaete on 15th November.
